[Yui Yui Festa 2015] (Fukushima city)

On Saturday, September 19th at the A・O・Z in Fukushima city, the Fukushima International Association sponsored [Yui Yui Festa 2015] took place.

This event was created as an opportunity for citizens and foreign residents of Fukushima city to gather and happily expand their cultural knowledge and understanding, of not only their own cultures, but of cultures from all over the world. Non-Government Organizations from all over the city presented booths introducing the charms of livelihoods, cultures, and foods from all over the world.

The theme of the FIA booth this year was [Experiencing Languages of the World], and those that participated were able to choose between English, Chinese, Portuguese, and Tagalog. Three example sentences were written in Japanese, and the participants used their chosen language to complete the sentences, thus gaining a slight understanding and experience for translation work. While there were words in English and Japanese that participants could guess right away, there were also words that they had absolutely no idea of their meaning. Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy their first translation experience.

JAPAN SOCIETY [American Educators Japan Study Tour] Acceptance

03.JPG 07.JPG

The New York based Japan Society sponsored their [American Educators Japan Study Tour] from Sunday June 28th to Saturday July 16th, for a total of three weeks, they were able to tour around Japan.

Wednesday July 15th and Thursday July 16th, 8 American educators visited Fukushima Prefecture. The FIA was honoured to be able to take part in and plan the Fukushima portion of this tour. This year would mark the 4th year that the FIA has offered its support to the Japan Society tour. This year as well, the American educator’s intense passion and enthusiasm to understand the current situation of Fukushima was emanating strongly.

On Wednesday July 15th, after arriving mid-morning at Fukushima Station, we made our way to Namie-machi by bus. After arriving at the Namie Town Hall and listening to an explanation by a staff member, we moved to the old train station and Ukedo Elementary school to observe the results of the disaster. Seeing the devastation of the area, much as it has been since the earthquake and following tsunami gave the educators a bit of a shock, but they were quickly asking many enthusiastic questions.

On Thursday, July 16th, in the middle of strong rain from a passing typhoon, the educators visited the Tiger Lily path at the Azuma Sports Park, and Seimei Elementary School in Fukushima City. After seeing how the school lunches are made and tested for levels of radioactivity, the educators participated in the schoolwide summer music festival, and then ate lunch with the first year students.

The educators planned to catch the Shinkansen to Tokyo a little after two in the afternoon, so they headed to the station after having lunch with the students. The educators reflected upon their prior and current knowledge of the situation in Fukushima, and seemed determined to teach their American students about the true situation of Fukushima upon their return. On this trip, in order to show all-American teachers the situation and to use as teaching materials, the Japan Society filmed portions of their trip.

If the Japan Society requests another tour of Fukushima, the FIA will gladly accept, and actively create a program to best convey the state of the prefecture.

※An album of the documented events has been uploaded to the FIA Facebook page. Please feel free to have a look. The following link is for the FIA Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/fiainfo

American (Grassroots Exchange Summit Oita Convention [Fukushima Program] Participants) Information

Every year through the John Manjiro Whitfield Commemorative Center for International Exchange in Tokyo, Japan and American hold a mutual exchange summit project. This year’s summit was held in Oita Prefecture from Monday July 6th until Monday, July 13th.

There were 4 choices for the Optional After Summit Program, one of which was Fukushima. When Fukushima was chosen as an after summit location, the FIA began planning to guide the participants on a tour of Fukushima.

On Monday, July 13th, the participants flew from Oita to Haneda Airport, and were taken by Shinkansen to Fukushima city, where they met their host families at Fukushima station, and a small welcome ceremony took place.

On Tuesday, July 14th, the FIA staff showed the After Summit Program participants the suffering and restoration efforts from the after effects of the Tohoku Earthquake and Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident. First, they headed to the Decontamination Information Plaza to learn about radioactivity and decontamination, followed by a trip to Minami-Soma’s Solar Agri Park, and finally, with the cooperation of the Soma Tourism Association, were able to visit various places within Soma City. They were able to see the facilities for children and public housing constructed with the donations received for the restoration effort, and also the memorial monument for those that were lost in the disaster. Through these experiences the participants were able to truly feel the degree of suffering, and steady efforts towards restoration.

On Wednesday July 17th, they were able to experience Fukushima’s nature and history by trekking through Goshiki-Numa (The Five-Coloured Ponds), enjoying Aizu’s regional foods, and visiting locations such as Tsuruga Castle and a famous sake brewery in Aizu. The participants appeared to deeply appreciate the brief lessons on history and culture.

The After Summit Program was blessed with wonderful weather over their three day course, and the participants seemed delighted with their warm receptions and interactions with their host families.

One of the main jobs at the FIA is to spread the truth of Fukushima to the world. Therefore, if the opportunity to offer this tour becomes a possibility next year and in the future, we would gladly accept it, and hopefully convey our ongoing progress to not only the country of Japan as a whole, but to the world.
